Vomiting in dogs is a natural reflex - in this way the animal's body gets rid of toxic products or foreign objects. If the dog vomited yellow masses, this may be a variant of the norm or talk about health problems. In the second case, hidden pathologies that threaten the pet's life are possible. In what situations do you need to urgently contact a veterinarian, and when can you manage on your own? How to distinguish "normal" yellow vomiting from pathological? How to help a dog? More on this later in the article.

Where does the yellow color in vomit come from?

Gastric juice is normally colorless and odorless, in rare cases its color is pale yellow. When bile enters the organ, the contents may change color to yellow, yellow-green. Bile is produced in the liver and is brown, dark yellow or greenish in color. It enters the digestive tract at the level of the duodenum 12. Some conditions can cause bile to reflux into the stomach and stain the contents.

Causes of yellow vomiting that do not threaten the health of the dog

Dogs have a highly developed instinct for "self-purification" of the body. For example, this can be observed during the active eating of green grass by animals, followed by emptying of the stomach. In this case, vomiting is a normal phenomenon that does not require any action on the part of the owner. A yellow tint is possible with excessive tension by the pet of the abdominal muscles and the reflux of a small amount of bile into the stomach.

Other non-hazardous conditions include:

  • swallowed foreign objects - pebbles, small bones, wool and others; if there is no food in the stomach, vomiting may be with foam, an admixture of mucus;
  • stress - provokes involuntary contractions of the muscles of internal organs;
  • pet overheating - heat stroke also leads to muscle contraction (not only skeletal, but also smooth, inherent in internal organs); the condition may be accompanied by diarrhea, high fever, convulsions;
  • hunger - an excess of gastric juice during hunger irritates the mucous membrane, which causes an instinctive desire to empty the stomach;
  • poor quality food - an abundance of artificial additives, substitutes, expired shelf life and other nuances often lead to vomiting with an admixture of bile;
  • overeating - in the process of eating, both gastric juice and bile are produced. Mechanical stretching of the stomach wall leads to its reflex contraction, resulting in vomiting of yellow masses with pieces of food.

Vomiting in such situations is observed periodically, once, does not pose a danger to the pet. After a short period of time, the dog recovers and feels great.

Causes of Vomiting Dangerous for Dogs

If bouts of vomiting continue, are accompanied by other disorders, and the animal does not get better, serious health problems are possible.

  • Poisoning. Yellow vomit is accompanied by diarrhea, severe weakness, high fever and other symptoms. The provoking factor can be poison, household chemicals, rotten food or poor-quality expired food. In industrial feeds, reproduction of pathogenic fungi is possible.
  • Helminthiases. An abundance of helminths in the intestinal tract of a dog can be observed if the owner neglected antiparasitic measures. Worms easily penetrate the stomach and, accumulating, provoke vomiting. Since adult worms come out with the vomit, it is easy to recognize the cause even at home.
  • Infections. Vomiting attacks are noted in diseases of an infectious nature: parvovirus enteritis, hepatitis and others. Intoxication, high fever, convulsions, if left untreated, lead to the death of the pet.
  • Neoplasms. These include tumors and growths of a different nature, which interfere with the normal digestion of food, lead to dysfunction of the digestive tract.
  • Diseases of the stomach and intestines. It can be ulcerative lesions, gastritis, gastroenteritis and other pathologies. There are particles of undigested food in the yellow vomit, the dog refuses food, looks emaciated.
  • Diseases of the liver and gallbladder. Cholecystitis, hepatitis, liver failure and other diseases of these organs are accompanied by bouts of nausea and yellow vomiting. In advanced cases, the skin and mucous membranes acquire a yellow tint. Pain in the right hypochondrium causes the dog to spread its front paws wide - this slightly reduces intra-abdominal pressure and relieves pain.
  • Pathology of the pancreas. The defeat of this organ is often accompanied by colic and vomiting.
  • Intestinal obstruction. It is observed due to a foreign body getting stuck in the gastrointestinal tract or, more often, a volvulus of the intestine, stomach. The blood flow is disturbed, food does not pass into the lower sections of the tract, a serious condition develops that is life-threatening for the dog.
  • Diseases of the endocrine system. Vomiting of yellow color can be observed in diabetes, pathologies of the adrenal glands. In parallel, there is a high appetite and thirst.

Taking medications for a long time can also provoke yellow vomiting. You should not, for example, give your dog steroidal and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs without the appointment of a specialist - they can not only lead to vomiting, but also cause severe internal bleeding.

Associated symptoms

Yellow vomiting can be accompanied by different symptoms, but you won’t be able to “guess” the disease on your own: the signs are often the same, but the nature of the pathology is different. In addition, in one case antiemetics help, in the other they are contraindicated. It is best to undergo a diagnosis in a veterinary clinic, and before visiting a doctor, write down (so as not to forget) any manifestations that differ from the norm.

Associated symptoms include:

  • mucus, blood, foam in the vomit;
  • undigested food in vomit or feces;
  • discoloration of urine, feces;
  • gas formation, rumbling in the abdomen;
  • refusal of food or, conversely, an increase in appetite, leading to a deterioration in the condition;
  • discoloration of the mucous membrane of the mouth, eyes;
  • increased involuntary salivation;
  • diarrhea with impurities of bile, mucus, blood or without them;
  • constipation;
  • dull coat;
  • convulsions;
  • loss of coordination of movements, unsteady gait;
  • general weakness;
  • high temperature.

There may also be shortness of breath, changes in behavior. The greatest danger is the appearance of blood in the vomit - then the dog must be urgently shown to the veterinarian.

How to distinguish harmless vomiting from pathology

First, you need to pay attention to the frequency and duration of urges. If the attack is single and does not recur, the dog behaves as usual, then there is nothing to worry about. The same applies to the situation if the pet vomited several times in a row, but with the release of a provoking factor, for example, grass, a ball of hair, bones.

Vomiting that is eliminated by food or a change in diet is also not dangerous. It is enough for a hungry dog to eat so that the gastric contents return to normal. A properly composed diet and high-quality food are the key to the normal functioning of the digestive tract and good digestion.

Attacks that occur against the background of pathology, as a rule, are observed frequently, do not disappear with a change in diet, and do not bring relief to the animal. They are longer. Gradually, other symptoms join them, the pet feels worse.

Sudden, persistent vomiting requires immediate medical attention. This condition is especially dangerous for puppies, as it can lead to rapid dehydration.

How to help a dog before visiting the clinic

If yellow vomiting occurred once, you need to remove the bowl of food from the dog, give clean, cool water. If your pet refuses water, do not insist, he may want to drink later. But in case of repeated attacks, it is necessary to drink the animal on its own with a pipette, a rubber bulb and other methods to prevent dehydration.

It is impossible to stop vomiting with special means! In case of exact certainty of poisoning, it is allowed to drink with activated charcoal diluted in water or another sorbent. In case of heat stroke, the pet should be provided with coolness, peace, wipe it with a wet cloth.

If there is no possibility of a quick visit to the doctor, you can prevent dehydration on your own. Using a rubber bulb or syringe, it is recommended to give the dog a glucose solution (5%), a salt-sugar aqueous solution, Ringer's solution (for intravenous administration) in small doses.

In the absence of repeated vomiting, experts advise keeping the dog on a starvation diet for half a day or a day. The first feeding after an attack should be gentle: in liquid form, warm, without fat.

How is the diagnosis carried out

Based on the owner's story and examination, the veterinarian makes a preliminary conclusion and appoints an examination. Depending on the symptoms, it may include:

  • blood, urine, stool tests.
  • gastroscopy.
  • x-ray.
  • ultrasound.

If necessary, the doctor will prescribe a laparoscopic examination, which allows not only to see changes in the internal organs, but also to perform surgical procedures.

Treatment

Treatment regimens depend on the identified cause of yellow vomiting. Drug therapy may include various groups of drugs:

  • antiemetic (Maropital);
  • antibacterial;
  • antiviral;
  • anthelmintic;
  • antispasmodic;
  • painkillers;
  • enterosorbents;
  • antacids.

Pets susceptible to stress are shown to take sedatives, sedatives, antidepressants. If an autoimmune pathology is detected, immunosuppressants are prescribed. In case of liver diseases, the doctor will prescribe hepatoprotectors and other medicines. To prevent the loss of water by the body and normalize the water-salt balance, intravenous saline is indicated. As the dog recovers, a therapeutic diet, probiotics, vitamin and mineral complexes are prescribed.

In some cases, the animal will need surgery. For example, when detecting intestinal obstruction, volvulus of the stomach and intestines, drugs will not help. The same applies to detected tumors, suppuration, internal bleeding, and so on.

Features of nutrition with vomiting

With yellow vomit, rest from food is of great importance for a dog. In puppyhood, recovery processes occur quickly, so you should not delay with therapeutic fasting, 4-6 hours are enough. An adult dog can be "put" on hunger for 12-24 hours, depending on its state of health and the diagnosis. In any case, this issue must be discussed with a veterinarian.

After fasting, it is allowed (again, depending on the condition) to give the pet warm chicken or fish broth in small portions, strengthening herbal decoctions. If yellow vomiting was caused by a disease, the usual food is introduced gradually, starting with liquid enveloping cereals, small pieces of chicken and fish. The frequency of feeding is increased, and the volume of servings is reduced.

Prevention

Proper nutrition, good quality balanced food is the main prevention of yellow vomiting, the development of gastrointestinal diseases and pet poisoning. Other measures include:

  • regular antiparasitic treatment;
  • compliance with the vaccination schedule;
  • a ban on eating fatty, spicy, flavored foods;
  • prevention of swallowing pieces on the street;
  • careful study of the composition of industrial feed;
  • timely treatment of infectious diseases.

If the dog is sensitive to stress, it is recommended to give her sedative herbal preparations. To prevent hidden pathologies, such as tumors, it is necessary to regularly bring the pet to the clinic for preventive examinations and tests.
